On the last February 2nd and 3rd, the scientific and technical body of the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) has reunited in its Brasilia office to discuss IPAM’s strategic planning, as well as new mechanisms of integrated teamwork, projects and programs. The Institute has been working on a further integration of the research teams and the works done, so that its initiatives and results can be optimized.
In the morning of day 1, program directors presented the elements of national and international context where IPAM’s work is inserted. In the afternoon, the focus was on a presentation of the projects that will be developed in 2012 for each of our programs: Amazon Scenarios, Community Management of Várzeas (Floodplains) and Forests, Climate Change and IPAM-IP International Program. On the 3rd, administration and communication representatives presented their results, pointing out challenges and alternatives for an integration strategy and to improve the Institute’s performance. On the second day it was also discussed IPAM’s general points of action, as a way to update strategy starting from different ongoing plans regarding the programs.
Making a reference to one of IPAM’s main projects – reduction and control of deforestation in the Amazon – Paulo Moutinho, the Institute executive director, has said that “our conquests can be even greater if we work more as a team, closer and more cohesive. The foundation is set, but the timing is critical. It’s like reducing deforestation by meeting targets: it is way easier to reduce when it’s at 29.000 km²/year. Now, when it’s at 6.000 km²/year, which is the government’s current challenge, it is way harder to advance (on reducing deforestation).”
Representatives of the regional offices of Rio Branco, Belém, Santarém, Altamira, Brasília and San Francisco participated in the meeting.
